St Lucia Soufriere: Volcano Mountains, Pittons Mountain Top

Derick Walcott, winner of the Nobel Prize in literature in 1992, chose Soufriere as the setting for a film of his 1957 play "Ti-Jean and his Brothers", because its of its mysterious nature. Located in south of St Lucia, Soufriere was a major trading port in the 18th century, it is now a centre for agriculture and tourism, and maintains its charm and mystery. "The narrow streets and thick vegetation give it a dark feeling," says Walcot, "and in that darkness there is mystery and a lot of power. Soufrierre also is home to St Lucia waterfalls and rainforests and the spectacular Anse Chastanet resort

There are many excellent hotels in this region. Some provide a spectacular view of the pitons .
A few are old sugar plantations converted now to magestic hotels. The Torallie waterfalls and garden are to the North of Soufriere. Close by is the Soufriere Volcano and Diamond Falls. On the north east tip of Soufriere is the St Lucia Rainforest. There are fewer hotels in immediate proximity of the waterfalls and the volcano, Still plantation is one that is just a few moments away from both. On the other hand nothing is very far away, its a 15 minuet drive to get from just about any hotel to another. There are many dive sites along the coast of Soufriere and several beach hotels. The main beach is Anse Chastnet. Sand along this coast is often grey/black as a result of past volcanic activity. There are mountain bike and hiking trails and many tours in the region.
